How are hydraulics applicable in the aviation industry and what are they?

Hydraulic systems work hand in hand with the yoke or the so called "steering wheel" of the plane. Basically hydraulics controls the movement of aircraft in all 4 directions, in case of a failure one will have trouble controlling the jet (left to right). That was a part of Hydraulic system, now the second part is controlling the movement of the landing gear the flaps and the brakes. Also autopilot!

Looking at these functions it would be terribly hard for humans to use a force to for example don the landing gear also it will take up a lot of effort and time. The Hydraulics do the job whilst using a very small amount of hydraulic fluid.

Tomorrow we'll do a case study on United 232, when it crash landed in Sioux city in USA following a hydraulic failure. For the time being I'll attach a crash animation of flight 232.
