Emirates and Etihad airlines are known for their limitless connections around the world, but being based in 1 country can be unhelpful.

1. "Deserted" airports

Apart from Dubai(both DXB and World Central)Abu Dhabi,Sharjah (bases of Emirates, Etihad and Air Arabia), There are the following airports.

1. Ras Al Khaimah- Air Arabia flying to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and Air India Express flying to Kozikhode. 4 flights per day only.

Wild Card - Khasab Airport- 1 daily flight to Muscat only.

2. Al Ain- Air India Express to Kozikhode, Etihad flies Bahrain.(Al Ain-Bahrain-Abu Dhabi) and PIA to Peshawar.

Another airport is Fujairah Airport which handles no flights at all, when any narrowbody is diverted and other airports are busy , Fujairah Airport is used.

Delma airport- Rotana Jet flying to Abu Dhabi (perhaps the only domestic flight in the UAE)

EXPERIENCE-

My dad was flying to Sharjah and then would continue to Dubai by road when his flight got diverted to Fujairah because of poor visibility in Sharjah. Upon landing neither refreshments were served nor the passengers disembark showing that the airport is mainly used for other purposes and is not there for civilian travel.

There are other airports too but;without flight like Sir Bani Yas airport but as like Fujairah these do not handle civilian aircraft.

Now as clearly proved having Emirates and Etihad in 1 country one might find it hard to catch good connections. For example a person living in Fujairah, wanting to travel to America, might need to take a road trip to Dubai which is 120 kilometers or to Abu Dhabi which is 255 kilometers.

-----OPINION-----

I think in these kinds of cases a regional airline should be formed. For example someone in Delma wanting to travel to for example, Hong Kong will preferably take the Rotana Jet flight to Abu Dhabi and then continue to Hong Kong in Etihad Airways without taking a car ride which takes 307 km.
